Bobby forgot about watching Elton’s band smoking a “J” and when a young Robert Kennedy Jr. walked into the small room back stage to grab a snack and a hello to the group.. Great memories for sure. I’m glad I didn’t have the “nose bleed” seats! Jimmy CauskySent from my iPhoneFYI...so bobby just happened to forward to me this thread he was having with a buddy about Elton John. You'll recognize the recollection I'm sure since u were there...

To: David Schulten <dschulten@emjmetals.com>Interesting backstory here. At my first concert ever, my friend Jim Causky and I had managed to get ahold of two backstage passes (my sister Kathi had a friend whose father was an executive at Concert Associates, a promotion company). Kathi had just turned 14 in 1974 and my parents wouldn't let her go to a rock concert, I turned 18 that year. We went with two other guys who had nosebleed tickets. The passes showed a picture of a circular piano with Elton playing it and were marked Access All Areas. When we got to the Forum we showed our passes to an usher and he said you can go backstage for the pre-show festivities. The whole thing really blew our teenage minds. It was pretty crowded and the celebrities included Elizabeth Taylor, Billie Jean King and a very young Tatum O'Neal (she had just won an Academy Award for her role in Paper Moon). At one point I saw Elton come out behind a door and he walked straight by me. This sounds pretty groupie-like but I wanted to touch him just to make some kind of contact so I just patted him on his shoulder when he walked by me. He was in full costume wearing a blue sequined jumpsuit, platform shoes, and of course crazy big-ass glasses. So Jim and I went back out and up to the seats where our buddies were sitting. We wanted to prove we had seen Elton and so told them what he would be wearing onstage. So sure enough the show starts and Elton comes out wearing a gold lame outfit...to this day I don't think our buddies believe we got backstage. Great show and then for the encore Elton plays Your Song solo. We were ushered backstage for the post-show party and I'll never forget his band members, Davey Johnstone (guitarist), Dee Murray (bassist), Nigel Olsson (drummer), and Ray Cooper (percussion), all huddled together smoking a joint. I believe Elton's hard-partying ways were still a year or so off in the future at that point. We just kind of hung out for awhile and then finally left through a door that led up to an inclined ramp. As we came out the door it was fairly dark and fans had lined up on both sides of it. When they saw two figures emerging from the door they let out a roar. But as we kept walking up the ramp they could see us better and the roar turned into a low moan and I heard someone yell out, "It's nobody." Pretty funny stuff, great memories. On Thu, Nov 15, 2018 at 3:20 PM David Schulten <DSchulten@emjmetals.com> wrote:I actually saw this commercial earlier today. I love Elton, saw him in Vegas about two years ago. My dad loves Elton and he played his music all the time growing up. Wish I could play his songs like you. Seems we have a similar voice J. I look forward to seeing the movie coming out. Such a musical talent. From: Robert Chapman [mailto:rchap347sum@gmail.com]

He was not only the first artist or band I saw in concert, at the Forum in 1974, but I learned to play the piano by buying the sheet music to his albums as soon as it was published. I bought a book that showed me how the notes on the sheet music matched up to the keys on the piano. I never took lessons. I remember at parties when I was a teenager, the first time I ever attracted any girl's interest was when I would sit down at the piano at whoever's house and play his songs. Girls never payed any attention to me before but when they heard the very same sounds coming from the piano that they heard on the radio, all of a sudden they would come over. Some could even sing his songs well, which of course I couldn't. Made for some lovely duets. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Elton John. Thanks for sending me that lovely video, I hadn't seen it before. Some of those young boys playing him really do look like he did at that age, very sweet.

Very cool. I remember you learning how to play the piano while I was on my mission. Then, many nights coming home from work and you would play on that baby grand piano.
Around this time, I would go on surfing trips with my buddies and of course love to hear "Your Song," "Rocket Man," "Daniel," etc. I loved then and still love now Elton John! What a great voice, incredible piano player and songwriter. A lot of feelings in those songs. Thanks for sharing!
