Do you guys remember that snack bar at the beach, down past the Long Beach Marina?  Back in the 60's and early 70's?  That was a major hangout of our youth.  Beach Boys soundtrack, and all that. Hot sand, body surfing with those hard rubber fins that made even me into a kind of surfer boy.  I'll tell you what, I loved it when the ocean water just picked me up and rather violently carried me to shallow waters.  I was trained to know that part of the fun is regularly going under.  Just pretend you are in the dryer for a spin cycle.  Believe it or not, that strategy worked, I learned how to get pulled underwater and just ride it out.  Pinball games, and beach-cooked food. I remember looking at a row of beach houses and one of them had huge speakers outside on their balcony and was playing The Who's "5:15" at a fearsome volume.  Great memories...

Alamitos Bay left side of the little pier where we learned to swim. On Friday's we'd earn ribbons and then mom would take us to get ice cream cones dipped in chocolate at the corner of Bay shore and 2nd.

Awesome. Yes. You obviously remember.  Drug store ice cream is the best.

Great memories of that place. Great greasy burgers and fries, also, if I recall correctly. See attached and below photos I found on fb. The guy whose father owned the place (last name "Wood") posted one of the pictures on the Belmont Shore!  fb page, with some great stories and said there were more on the Born and Raised in Long Beach fb page, but you have to apply and get accepted. I just submitted a request, waiting for acceptance. Immediately below are a couple of their comments. Classic!

  • Jim Wood Glad you posted this Barry , my dad introduced me to your dad when he lived on Bayshore , I was a rookie lifeguarding on the beach that year.... I think you may know my brother " Bob Wood " not sure if you do but I think I remember you for some reason... " Woodies Goodies " as the place to hang and play handball .... cool memories....

Barry Wood Yep, there was a Woodies Goodies. My family built it in the late 1940's. Harry Wood was my dad and was inducted into the Long Beach Lifeguard hall of fame. He built it and lifeguarded at the Bayshore station. Got my first job there from my dad for $.25 an hour. I did post a picture on the "Born and raised in Long Beach FB page". I can post the picture here if you can't find it. Thank you for your interest.

I think the three of you might be interested in Bob's email below and the responses. Mom, when did you first move to Long Beach? And Dad?

Steve:

I hope you are doing well.

My brother Bob started a conversation about "Woody's Goodies," and I thought you might be able to shed some light on this. Let me know if you have any memories that you can add.

These are great! Yes remember it all. Taking the sabot out sailing and then tipping it over :) We would take the lessons over and over is how I remember it. If we passed we would get a cone dipped in chocolate so we would take the lessons multiple times so we could get a treat every Friday. Mom would make our lunch so I don't think we ever ate at Woodies Goodies. Too expensive to take five kids there lol. Just passed by it all the time.  Mom was so great to take us to the beach 5 days a week. I can't believe how many memories I have from our time at the beach. One of the childhood experiences I remember and loved the most 😊

Love all these memories! I remember Woodies Goodies and the smell of burgers being cooked. I loved that smell but knew they were too expensive to ever buy one. But I do remember on occasion getting red licorice. Great memories!
Thanks for sharing Bob!

Some of my favorite memories too Vicki. I remember if anyone won a race on Friday mom would buy us all those chocolate dipped cones. I remember being so young and not knowing how to hold or eat it before it was melting and dripping all down my hand and arm. But I loved it and just being all together celebrating anyone’s win. What a great way mom taught us that anyone’s victory was ours too.

Nice to hear from you, Bill. I remember buying black licorice there for a penny a piece. Other memories of that time, eating bologna sandwiches on white bread that didn't taste quite right without a little sand in them. Playing pocket pool at the playground there. Barbecues after sailing races at Leeway on those little hibachi barbecues and going for evening swims with phosphorescence from the red tide. Lots of great memories!!!!!!

Point of personal privilege here, I certainly ate at Woodie's Goodies.

Vicki such a great observation you made about going out on the water in a sabot.  Dad thought he was Ferdinand Magellan or something, but lacked the budget to pull it off.  He made up for it by taking us out on the water on the one boat he could afford.  Our memories are even better for that fact, a little boat like that brought us closer together.  And of course, Mom and Dad didn't have conveniences that we enjoy.  They had to play the hand they were dealt.  I can only speak for myself of course, but I remain in awe of their parenting skills, both of them.

Some levity for everyone, Pam saw this thread and told me FYI she dated Jimmy Wood and if any of us want to connect with him on Facebook she can make that happen! LOL

Funny thing is a bunch of us aging boomers started talking about this and I have learned that some millennials that live down by the water were saying, I never heard of that place, I think they are making that up.  I'm like, the Beatles broke up in 1970, you weren't born then, do you think we made that one up also?
